I feel that it is generally easy to be promoted and recognised for your contribution to the firm. There is a structured program of check-ins with performance coaches, and most senior staff take a genuine interest in people within the company so they have a finger on the pulse about who is contributing to the work/culture at the firm. Between these two things, it is quite easy for contributions to be noticed by senior staff.

On the pro bono front, each pro bono hour counts as a billable hour (with no limit). I've done days at RACS and HPLS, as have all the other grads. We've got committees focused on social issues - eg the sustainability committee, and the reconciliation committee (which has been very active about the Voice to Parliament). I think we were also the first firm to become carbon-neutral.

The strength of the interpersonal relationships in our office is much stronger than I anticipated, but it is a strength of the firm. It is a place where a lot of people are very good friends, and take a genuine interest in their colleagues. The social activities are great opportunities to meet new people, and there is generally a culture of inclusion so that everyone is invited into existing social groups to make new friends and connections.

I think it's something that is driven by individuals in the firm but strongly supported by the partners. This year in particular, there seems to be a focus on building an understanding of the nature of diversity and the benefits of diversity.

Each day is varied and the work is interesting. The teams are non-siloed, so I get to continually work with different people, on different types of matters.

They are very accessible. I've had a great experience with my manager who has offered some very wise, practical and helpful advice. And makes me feel encouraged, supported and valued. I'm also impressed with the courage of the firm in taking a view on social issues that resonate with me.

The office fit out is beautiful and calming yet energising. The dress code is more on the casual side of corporate but is dependent on what the day looks like. People dress more formally if going to meetings or court.

I think the hiring process is a strong drawcard for the company. The hiring process is rigorous enough to identify candidates who seem to have a genuine interest in the area of law and fit well in the vibe of the company. The hiring process also allows candidates to connect with a range of existing employees at the firm, all of whom are very generous with their time during the recruitment process. I think this tradition of mentorship during the application process helps candidates make an informed decision about whether to accept an offer at Allens.

I think we get paid well, it is in line with market rates, and we have received pay rises every year.

Fantastic training and mentorships, as long as you are willing to learn and engage. Allens offers formal training across core teams and legal areas for all graduates, as well as internal training being hosted specifically for the team you are rotating through.

I was covered by the LSA until my admission, so finished by 6 pm each day (though usually more like 5:30 pm). Since coming to the LSA I've only had a handful of post-6 pm finishes - I'm usually in at 8:30 am and out by 6 pm. I haven't exercised it, but the firm is definitely flexible with hours - I know a lot of people transit home early in the afternoon to do school pick-up and log back on later.
