Pros & Cons

  • The culture is fantastic, and I feel really supported in my role by both my leaders and the Graduate Program organisers.
  • The flexibility and Range of Opportunities Available for people of all backgrounds and skillsets
  • The City's motivation towards change, innovation and providing the best services to the community.
  • The flexibility! Being able to work a 9-day fortnight, working from home and the activity-based model that we are working towards.
  • The best thing about working at the City of Gold Coast is the combination of flexible work arrangements, incredible support from the team, and ample growth opportunities. The flexible work arrangement has allowed me to manage my work-life balance effectively and be more productive. The supportive and inclusive team environment has made me feel valued and connected, while the opportunities provided graduate academy at the City of Gold Coast have been instrumental in my growth as a recent graduate.
  • It is difficult to say for the entire company as it spans across many fields of work. However, in my department at least I feel as though certain systems could be optimised/improved for efficiency.
  • I would say you need to wait for a period of time when you want to get access to the app or shared drive, sometimes need approval.
  • As I am under a 12-month contract, job security. But I am hopeful!
  • You have to bring your own cutlery, milk and tea.
  • I don’t think there’s anything worst about working with the City of Gold Coast. I genuinely enjoy the work I do and appreciate the positive environment and opportunities for contributing to the community.

Culture
There is a healthy engagement with all levels of the organisational structure as part of the 2024 Graduate Academy Program. I have had opportunities to meet, talk and listen to the CEO, the Mayor, Councillors, Directors and General Managers of other departments, as well as operational staff in various sectors of the organisation during scheduled day events. I have participated in departmental social challenges that are run regularly, such as step challenges, squat challenges, airplane competitions etc. I have also been invited to comedy show nights with staff and department dinners, or even regular lunches to celebrate additions to the team, birthdays or farewells.

My manager is so lovely and supportive. From my first day, she had me seated next to her and has made herself available to assist me or answer any questions I have had. No matter how busy she is, she always has time for me. She also checks in with me on a monthly basis to discuss monthly goals, gives feedback and requests feedback from me as well.

Spacious office, have staff canteen, gym and a pool table in the basement! Great office location, easy to commute. my team is pretty casual with dress codes, as long as you are comfortable with them.

Recruitment
There were no assessments for this hiring process, which made the process a lot more streamlined than other graduate programs. The interview process was fantastic - a meeting was scheduled soon after closing and having a face-to-face meeting was refreshing as it gave me a chance to understand the team and who I would be working for. It made sure that I was a good fit for them, and that they would be a good fit for me personality-wise. Within a week of the interview I was given a verbal offer, so the quick process was excellent.
