What it does:  As a growing not-for-profit health fund, our members and their wellbeing are our sole reasons for being.

Mission:  Our priority is to help our members and their dependents lead healthy and happy lives.

Size and presence: Northern Health has over 5,700 dedicated professional staff and has annual revenue turnover of over $700 million present in a suburb of Melbourne called Bundoora .

Best known for: We have around 200 employees in Australia.

The good bits: Flexible working options.

The not so good bits: Lack of strategic structure and management.

The HIF story

HIF (Health Insurance Fund of Australia) began in 1954 as the Western Australian Government Railways Employees’ Hospital and Medical Fund. Within a few months this name was changed to the Government Employees’ Hospital and Medical Benefits Fund Incorporated. In 1978, to comply with the Associations Incorporations Act 1895 (WA), HIF became the Health Insurance Fund of WA. In 2010, the fund changed its name to Health Insurance Fund of Australia Limited to reflect its nationally expanding client base. Also in 2010, data published by the Private Health Insurance Administration Council (PHIAC) revealed HIF to be the fastest growing not-for-profit Australian health fund for that financial year.

Culture & vibe

By preserving our status as a registered open-access, not-for-profit Member-focused private health insurer, we qualify for exemption from income tax assessment under the Income Tax Assessment Act 1997 (Cth) (although we are subject to other forms of taxation).

Unlike many Australian health funds, we do not have shareholders. Moreover, cash dividends are not paid directly to our fund Members. Instead, we return any surpluses to our members in the form of lower premiums, increased rebates and new benefits and services. This is our way of rewarding our loyal members.

Our priority is to help our members and their dependents lead healthy and happy lives. Simple as that. We do this by providing a choice of insurance covers for hospital, medical and extras services. We also offer great value pet insurance and travel insurance!

Social Contributions

In order to become a certified ‘NOCO2’ health fund, we commissioned the Carbon Reduction Institute (CRI) to review and analyse our business.

They then calculated our carbon footprint (the amount of greenhouse gas we are responsible for emitting into the atmosphere).

Following the review, CRI suggested ways we could reduce our carbon footprint, and we have offset all remaining emissions through the purchase of carbon abatement credits.

The project in which we are currently purchasing carbon offsets is focused on reducing fossil fuel emissions to improve public health and environmental degradation.
