La Trobe's Diploma of Engineering Technology gives you an immersive introduction to the field of engineering and a pathway to one of two world-class bachelor's degrees. Gain the skills, knowledge, and experience to tackle engineering problems and implement creative solutions.

You'll explore foundational concepts in mathematics, physics, and programming and from there, you'll discover how to apply these concepts to devise engineering solutions.

As you progress, you'll gain experience collaborating with teams to effectively achieve goals. You'll also develop your written and oral communication skills and build your confidence in relaying complex technical information.

Once you've completed your Diploma, you'll be eligible to apply for advanced standing to enter the second year of La Trobe's Bachelor of Civil Engineering (Honours) or Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Industrial) where you can further enhance your industry knowledge and experience by undertaking large-scale projects and work placements.

  • Programming for engineers and scientists
    • Design and create software solutions to real-life problems, using programming languages such as Python.
  • Computer Aided Design (CAD)
    • Harness the computer tools to design, simulate and model an engineered product.
  • Principles of physics
    • Learn foundational concepts in physics and how these apply to solving real-world engineering problems.
  • Engineering design and problem solving
    • Examine current engineering practices and develop your creative engineering design skills through an industry research project.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 5 - Diploma.

Graduates of the Diploma of Engineering Technology may find employment in a range of engineering fields including civil, electrical, electronics, environmental, structural, construction, mechanical, manufacturing, infrastructure development or project management.

Roles may include:

  • Junior CAD designer or cadet drafter
    • Use CAD (computer-aided design) software to help generate designs and build models using 2D or 3D imagery. Use modelling and simulation tools to develop systems and components for complex engineering projects.
  • Mechanical technician
    • Collect information, conduct tests and analyse data relating to mechanical systems. Support the assembly and installation of mechanical systems used by mechanical engineers or technologists.
  • Service technician
    • Manage equipment databases and requirements to ensure internal quality control and ISO standards. Manage and distribute CAD standards to design consultants and assist with design issues.
  • Civil technician
    • Support engineers through the planning, design and management of the construction and maintenance of buildings, roads and other infrastructure projects. Provide other civil engineering administrative assistance including the estimation of costs, timeline planning and preparation of specifications for project materials.
