About the role

As a Cadet Civil Designer, you will be part of the Civil Design Team and you will utilise your developing technical skills and knowledge to assist in the delivery of conceptual, preliminary, and detailed design documentation for the annual Capital Works portfolio.

This is an opportunity to build a long-term career as a professional Civil Designer with a progressive Council, whilst being paid to study an Associate Degree in Civil Engineering. Council will support your study in the form of financial support towards course fees. subject to return of service obligations as part of your conditions of employment.  

The Cadet Civil Designer will work under the supervision and mentorship of a Senior Civil Designer, under the direction of the Principal Engineer (Design), to gain experience in investigations, Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) using AutoCAD, and 12d Model Software (at a basic level), and to undertake periodic site visits and other activities associated with the provisions of civil engineering design documentation.

As a Cadet Civil Designer, you will develop the necessary skills to:

  • Understand civil design principles, standards, and guidelines.
  • Attain skill in drafting using Auto CAD and any other Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) packages.
  • Acquire knowledge of civil engineering, standards, guidelines, and practices.
  • Analyse problems in a logical and organised manner, analysing causes, considering alternative outcomes and identifying solutions using individual judgement and initiative.

About you

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Demonstrated commitment towards a career becoming a Civil Designer
  • Sound interpersonal (both oral and written) skills to deal effectively with a range of people
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and prioritise own work loads
  • Demonstrated ability to acquire knowledge of Design standards, guidelines and practices
  • Basic research and computing skills

Cadets are required to be studying:

  • Associate Degree in Civil Engineering (at TAFE Queensland or a relevant University / Tertiary Institution). The course can be completed within 2 years (full-time) or 4 years (part-time).

The position is banded at Level 2, with up to 15 hours per week (vacation period up to full time) with an annual salary commencing at $67,077 (pro-rata) plus superannuation of up to 12.25% (paid pro-rata depending on the hours worked per week).
