Join a global professional services leader. We are committed to solving the world’s biggest challenges in the areas of water, energy and urbanisation.

If you want to start a career with impact, solving everyday problems through to tackling some of the great challenges our clients and communities face, you’ll find that here at GHD.

You might think that sounds like marketing spin, but that’s the lived experience of our graduates, who participate in opportunities across the business, whether in different teams, different locations or different career pathways.  We’re a business built on finding your path in a supportive, collaborative environment.

Because a career is more than just the job, you'll connect with our broader Young Professionals and Women in GHD networks, to learn from their experiences and help develop broader social networks across the company.  There’s also the ability to participate in our GHD in the Community program where we partner with not-for-profit organisations to provide opportunities to work on pro-bono projects, volunteer and fundraise for philanthropic and humanitarian causes.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for Engineers & Scientists of all types and Project Management students to join our program in 2023 across our Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Dunedin, Hamilton, Hastings, Palmerston North, Taumarumui and Tauranga offices.

Whether you are a recent graduate or someone completing their final year of studies, we have opportunities across the following business groups.  If you have a preference for one or more of these areas, you’ll be able to highlight this in your application.

  • Energy (Transmission & Distribution, Substation Engineering, Traction Power, Renewables)
  • Resources (Materials Handling, Tailings & Dams, Mining Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering)
  • Environmental (Contaminated land, Ecology, Flora & Fauna, Aqualab, Approvals & Planning, Sustainability)
  • Transport (Roads, Rail, Bridges, Materials Engineering, Tunnels, Traffic & Transport Planning)
  • Water (Hydrology, Surface Water, Infrastructure & Design, Stormwater, Waste Water Treatment & Process Engineering)
  • Property & Buildings (which includes Architecture, Interior Design, Urban Design, Landscape Design, Mechanical, Electrical & Hydraulic Building Services, Building Structures, Civil, Waste Management)

What can we offer you?

Outside of the technical development you’ll gain working within your team, you’ll also join GHD’s Graduate Development Program. The Graduate Program is a globally aligned learning framework where you’ll interact with graduates across Australia, New Zealand, Asia Pacific and the Middle East.  It has been designed for future portability, so that no matter where your graduate position in GHD takes you, your learning experience will be impactful and consistent.

During the two-year program, you’ll learn about our business and our values, your team and most importantly, yourself. You’ll develop your decision-making, communication, technical and

leadership skills. We offer personal mentoring and a variety of development activities.

What happens after you apply?

Once we receive your application, it will be reviewed by one of our Talent Acquisition team members who manage each of our regions. If your application is shortlisted, we will get in touch with you for a Video Interview, where you’ll get the chance to introduce yourself and make another positive impression on both our TA team and hiring managers.

How do you apply?

  1. Select the "Apply" button
  2. Please allow up to 10 minutes to complete the questions.
  3. Upload a copy of your updated cover letter, CV and academic transcript/s.

If you’re successful through our recruitment process, your full-time position will start in February 2023. There may also be ongoing opportunities for casual work throughout your final year of studies.

Pros and cons of working at GHD New Zealand

Pros

  • The support from my team and my higher-ups makes me confident in getting things wrong but then trying again with support and doing better

  • I think people are really understanding of Graduates having virtually no corporate experience. They are happy to answer questions and give you time to learn.

  • There are ample opportunities to develop a range of technical skills and workplace development skills. The people are incredible to work with who embody the principles of kotahitanga (unity), awhinatanga (kindness) and manaakitanga (support). Flexible work hours and working locations to accommodate my needs as a single mother who is also studying. You can be yourself and express/share the things you are passionate about and value.

  • The coworkers are lovely to be around and interact with, I feel appreciated and urged to learn new things which is good. The office location supports cycling and is close to town which is a bonus.

  • Supportive team, understanding and relaxed environment. Going home within reasonable hours. Opportunities to work in and visit other offices.

Cons

    • Studying a creative degree to then head to a creative role in a corporate environment as a newbie, it's not really what you expect. Training is sufficient here, however exploring and developing your creativity here is a bit stunted. You will need to go outside to fulfil your creative needs

    • Lack of development in cultural capability but they are working on it which is encouraging.

    • Too many project opportunities so couldn't figured out which one to prioritise

    • Larger company means you don't know everyone or everything that's going on, and can get lost in the crowd a bit

    • The work can be not very engaging at times
