About Department of Justice WA

The Department of Justice supports the community, Western Australian Government, judiciary, and Parliament through the provision of access to high-quality justice, legal and corrective services, information, and products.

Your role

The State Solicitor's Office Law Graduate Program is designed to provide an excellent foundation for a career in law. Law Graduates will gain practical experience in the full range of practice areas within the State Solicitor's Office, by rotating through each of these practice areas in their graduate year.

In 2024 all law graduates employed in this program will be offered a three-year and one-month contract.

You will commence as a level 4 Law Graduate for the first 12 months of employment, and then transition to a Solicitor (L2LG) for the remaining contract term (once eligible to practice law in Western Australia). Following completion of the three-year program, conversion to permanency may be offered.

Training & development

The Department of Justice Graduate Program offers a range of pathways, rotations through varied business areas and professional development opportunities. The program supports participants with dedicated mentors, program coordinators and experienced managers. Graduates participate in an 18-month program undertaking three six-month rotations. The Department recruits students from a range of educational disciplines.

Salary & benefits

As provided by the employer, the Law Graduate (Level 4) role may earn a salary of A$84,582 - A$88,927.

About you

As the Office responsible for providing broad-based, high-quality legal services to the Government of WA and its agencies and departments, the State Solicitor's Office recognises that exceptional service is only possible if the right people are employed. 

You will have excellent academic results in your law degree and a particular commitment to public service and the values of the State Solicitor's Office.

You will have excellent communication skills and be able to work well with others while working independently when required.

Eligibility to Apply

The State Solicitor's Office will accept applications for employment as a Law Graduate from:

  1. Law graduates who have not completed the coursework component of an approved practical legal training course.
  2. Law graduates who have completed the coursework component of an approved practical legal training course (such as that provided by the College of Law) but have not been admitted to practice law. 
  3. Law graduates who have completed the requirements of an approved practical legal training course (such as that provided by the College of Law) and have already been admitted to practice law but have not yet practised law.
