Project:

Known as the “Gladstone Sustaining Capital Works” (GSCW), a service order agreement will be arranged with Rio Tinto Alumina to assist with judicious Gladstone capital projects and Brisbane office services. Bechtel has a history with both greenfield formation and brownfield expansion of the Yarwun Alumina Refinery, along with Special Project initiatives.  Similarly, over time, QAL has been assisted by Bechtel through directed in-plant services support. These placements will assist with meeting timeframe delivery, contractor management, and capital project management within the Yarwun Alumina Refinery and Queensland Alumina Refinery (QAL) facilities. These placements will work alongside existing shutdown teams and maintenance activities to focus on safely executing specific capital projects. 

The Graduate Controls Engineer assists in basic/simple cost estimating, analysis, and control activities and basic/simple schedule development, maintenance, reporting, and monitoring activities, as directed. Duties consist of a variety of tasks set within parameters established by the procedure or process being supported and the cost or schedule engineer assigning the task. Reports to and receives technical and operational supervision from designated supervisory personnel. May provide direction to other Project Controls support personnel. Maintains relationships within the assigned group, and with other functions, as appropriate to the tasks required. 

About the Role:

The following duties are General/Common across disciplines within the Project Controls function:

  • Collects or receives, as directed, drawings and other scope definition documentation that applies to assigned discipline or commodity specialty, and verifies adequacy and completeness.
  • Performs, as directed, routine quantity takeoffs, within the discipline or commodity specialty, from engineering and construction drawings.
  • Collects and tabulates quantity data for summary comparisons and reconciliations.
  • Assists in preparing graphic presentations from draft materials prepared by estimators/Project Controls personnel. 

The following duties are performed concerning Cost Engineering and Estimating:

  • Applies unit rates (cost and job hour) to quantities and performs extensions for total cost estimates, as assigned within a discipline or commodity specialty. Performs routine assigned tasks related to preparation and application of cost monitoring and control standards, techniques, programs, and reports as specifically directed. Assists in collecting, classifying, and categorizing cost data, as directed. 

The following duties are performed concerning Scheduling:

  • Assigns scope (hours, quantities, etc.) to schedule activities as specifically directed. Calculates durations for scheduled activities within a discipline or specialty based on scope (hours, quantities, etc.), as directed.
  • Organizes appropriate quantity and workforce information for an assigned discipline or specialty.
  • Gathers information to support specific schedule studies, as directed. Gathers schedule information for updating discipline or specialty progress and performance reports, as directed. Inputs to various proprietary schedule software systems, including data preparation, file management, report generation, and general file quality and content control. These systems typically include Primavera, MS Project, Milestones, Schedule Contingency calculators, etc. 

What you bring:

  • Beginning level of proficiency in the use of the Microsoft suite of automation tools and cost/estimating/scheduling computer applications.
  • Experience performing quantity takeoffs and statistical analysis. 
  • Understands technical processes, engineering drawings, quantity determinations, and mathematical and financial records as required.
  • Beginning level of knowledge of engineering, procurement, contracts, construction, and startup work processes, as performed by Bechtel.
